Chamber Music Celebrates Youth and GeniusThirteen-year-old Jonathan Chan is the quintessential boy genius – already a master of both the violin and piano. As such, he is the perfect guest artist for Chamber Music San Juans’ August 28 program, "Youth and Genius," at San Juan Community Theatre. Curtain time is 8:00 p.m. CMSJ director Andor Toth first heard the young violinist when he served as an adjudicator for a national music competition in Canada. Chan, then just nine years old, simply stunned the judges with his execution of a Sibelius violin concerto. "It’s a very difficult piece," Toth said, "and he played it with both technical skill and artistic finesse. It is clear that this young man is headed for a wonderful career, and we are lucky to be among the first to hear him perform. Just as importantly,’ Toth continued, “Jonathan is much like other young people his age. He plays soccer, loves hockey and studies hard. I think he sets an important example for his peers as to what anyone can accomplish with dedication. I hope that some of the young people in our community will take advantage of this opportunity the hear him perform, and to talk with him after the concert." Chan joins an enviable ensemble of international soloists on this week’s program, in works by Mendelssohn and Schubert, who also were young geniuses. CMSJ favorites Cary Chow, Virginia Dziekonski, Chris Harshman, Patricia Kostek, Robert Meyer, Andor Toth, Agnes Vadas and Jim Weaver, comprise the Festival Chamber Soloists, accompanying Chan in a Mendelssohn concerto, and performing works by Brahms and Schubert. This performance is sponsored by Kings Market. Tickets are $23 for adults, $12 for student reserved, with $5 student RUSH available one hour before each performance. In addition, a private donor has made provision for free tickets to anyone needing financial assistance to attend a Theatre event, and families are especially encouraged to inquire about this opportunity. The SJCT Box Office is open Tuesday-Friday, 11-4, Saturdays 10:30-1:30, and one hour before any show. TICKETS CAN BE ORDERED THROUGH OUR |
