The New York Times wrote, "Both musically and theatrically…a triumph of ensemble playing. It doesn’t merely celebrate the value of friendship and life’s simple pleasures, it embodies them." "A story reminding you that the best things in life are good friends, a little lovin’, fishin’ and homemade pies," said Gary Pillette, director of the production, "with music that makes your toes tap, fingers snap and hands clap." Island musicians forming "The Band" in Pump Boys and Dinettes are Keith Busha, Dan Gillespie, Steve Keys and Scott Spadafora. "This is American music, an eclectic mix of honkytonk, blues, gospel, rockabilly, even a little cajun," said Busha, the show’s music director.
